Faux Bas Relief

(Click above to see more detail)
Each StudioTime artist has an Altered Book that we use to sketch, create projects in and generally breath new life into an obsolete book. Next week, our altered books are going to be transformed in a process I am calling a Faux Bas Relief. Bas Relief is actually carving in stone, or sculpting from a field (piece of marble, etc). "Relief" means to raise, and in our project we will use layers of chipboard to build up from the background board to create images.

Super easy, super great results.

Above I cut multiple peony leaf shapes, glued them all together with a glue stick. Each image must have four or more layers built up to create the "raised" effect. Before glueing them to my background board, I painted them. When the flowers and the leaves were glued down, I rubbed the whole work with sepia paint and a gel medium to give it an "old leather tome" look.

Below, I'm creating a back cover. It's a self portrait. It's just chipboard at this stage.
